Boatwerks – June 20, 2009

Valentiger made their second appearance at the lovely and breathtaking Boatwerks on Lake Macatawa.  Though inside on their visit during the winter, the band now got the chance to play a much more lively set on the sprawling deck overlooking the waters.  And in the theme of sprawling, the boys decicded to dust off a few older tunes to play during the three-hour performance.  Drummer, Scott Rider, was reached for comment on the aging material, “‘Summer’s Gone’ was one of my favorites of the night.  It’s always good to revisit the older tracks and refresh them as the band grows.”  Shirey also did his part to re-learn several songs that have fallen out from live performance over time, “‘Straight Street,’ ‘This Now’ and even the more recent ‘Daybed’ are often requested by listeners.  I’d honestly forgotten how to play a lot of these older, singer/songwriter professions, but every once in a while I feel the desire to bring them back.  Some are in awkward tunings, some are personal and most just don’t smoothly fit into a regular 45-minute set.”  “Fooled Twice” reared it’s head at the end of the first set along with many other Magnet songs played by request.  Zach, working the outside bar, made the boys his patented Ecto Cooler drink, just as he had done the time before.  As the sweltering heat finally seceeded during the third set, Valentiger made sure to squeeze in the sleepy “Under the Gun,” from Power Lines To Electric Times, which has sparked them to perform the album in it’s entirety Friday, June 26th at Jukes.  Check the calendar for details!
