Jukes - June 26, 2009

Being that it was the day after Shirey’s birthday, he must have decided to “straight up do what he wants.”  And the band agreed with his suggestion to play “Power Lines To Electric Times” in its entirety for this Friday night crowd at Jukes Bar.  The boys of Valentiger are known for their affinity for “keeping it real” as well as liking a good challenge - and that was all it took.  Shirey brought some extra instrumentation and even a tremelo pedal for rarer, “album tracks” such as “Under The Gun” (dedicated to Schultz) and “Daybed” (dedicated to Rider).  Kehoe was quoted, “It was strange for us to play tracks like ‘Leaving Town’ at the number two slot in the setlist, but I liked it.  It kept things fresh for us.  I’d also like to see ‘Under The Gun’ come out at live shows more often.”  There were some awkward pauses between songs, as the band was out of their usual flow, but the band sees it as a good thing.  Shirey was playing his concert-size acoustic guitar through the club’s P.A. system and the soundman felt the desire to put an extreme echo on his vocal for “Man on Fire.”  He comments, “A band can’t really grow without taking risks or staying true to what they feel their next move should be.  We enjoy putting ourselves at risk.  Otherwise, we’d probably just play ‘Margaritaville’ nine times through and make more money.”
