Lemonjello’s – August 21, 2009

The men of Valentiger doubled over as a band and as soundmen for this evening of music at Lemonjello’s in Holland.  They arrived early to set up equipment, shoot the breeze with owner, Matt, and drink a few bubble teas in mild summer weather.  At precisely 8:30PM, Drew Behringer played his acoustic ditties, closing with a Boys II Men song.  The cover of “I’ll Make Love To You” was only topped by Steve Jenkins’ song “Naked Boy” explaining “the children turn into soldiers and whores.”  Valentiger then took the stage near 10PM with a pretty stripped down set up.  This provided room for the melodies and lyrics to shine with Shirey and Kehoe polishing via vocal harmonies.  Shirey had just overcome a case of pharyngitis to make it through the likes of “Hard To Let Me Down” and “Leaving Town.”  After the show, patrons compared his softer vocal styling on songs such as “Married to Change” to those of Cat Stevens.  Rider and Kehoe gave a speech about the upcoming “Valentiger Tour Field Recordings” video series to be released weekly, starting September 7th.  They also attempted to lure listeners into a timeshare to no avail.

Check out a preview of the aforementioned video series here.
