Private Party – August 29, 2009

Valentiger normally does not play weddings, but when they are asked to perform as Valentiger, playing Valentiger music, they are glad to do so for close friends.  And so they found themselves at the Holland Cultural Center, setting up their equipment in a dance studio which now contained a bar stocked with liquor.  The wedding party was moving from room to room throughout the center and they were currently having the traditional English Breakfast when the band arrived.  From there, they moved in to the dance studio where Valentiger played an acoustic “cocktail set.”  The bride noted that, somehow, the boys had managed to almost match their unplanned outfits and they went on to play pretty smoothly in the unconventional format.  They brought things in slow with classics such as “Summer’s Gone,” “Julia” and Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold,” before the bride and groom were both finally in the room.  Then, it was on to a few requests they had obliged including “Straight Street,” “Blades of Steel” and The Beatles’ “Hey Jude.”  The band had not played “Blades of Steel” since well before Schultz’s departure, let alone acoustically for a wedding, but it was the bride’s favorite song and they vowed to make it happen.  And although the result was less than perfect, the feat had been accomplished and she was happy.  Even more comical was the band’s last-minute rendition of “Hey Jude” with Kehoe on lead vocal.  The ending was obviously shortened and, afterward, patrons joked that the band “missed a few bars.”  When the set was over and it was time for the DJ to “do his thing,” the wedding party moved into another room to dance and dine on an exquisite selection of meats and cheeses.  What really put the icing on the cake as Valentiger left, was the bride sincerely telling the band in an English accent, “You guys were shit-hot!”

Congrats guys – glad Valentiger could be a part of the celebration!
