After scouting locations with the director for the upcoming “Never Ready” music video, Valentiger made the 2-hour+ drive to Bellaire, Michigan to play Short’s Brewery. Immediately upon arrival, they spotted Michael Moore in the street and found it a bit odd. However, it seemed even more strange that the room they’d be playing to had been blocked off for a private party. And as they loaded in through the back door to the stage, Michael Moore was now inside giving a speech, hamming it up with the patrons. He was believed to be celebrating the release of his newest movie and his residence in the area. At any rate, Valentiger made sure to get him a copy of Power Lines To Electric Times before he split the scene. Then, they boys grabbed a quick beer and then hopped up on stage to play for a strange brew of people. There was the young vacationing table, the two female heads of the democratic party, a table of 70+ golfers and a few, scattered music lovers. The stage was great and the sound system wasn’t bad at all (the band had brought their own mixer, fiddling with it while playing) and awkward stage banter and lashings at “freebirders” kept things interesting. The boys made it as long as they could, playing mellow tunes until someone yelled “Old Time Rock and Roll!” followed by a separate person shouting, “Yeah! Quit fu**ing around!” So, inevitably, the band played some rocking covers, weaved into their own upbeat tunes. And something seemed to work, for when they finished their first and only long set, people wanted to chat and several CD’s were sold. It was a nice addition to the “honor cover,” which would provide their only payment for the night. The kitchen closed, and for fear that they had missed out on the famed pizza, they finished half a sausage and banana pepper pizza that had been left on a table. And after some great chats, the boys finished their second beers and hit the road back toward Grand Rapids in a foggy giddiness. Somewhere nearby Michael Moore was looking up the sandwich video for “Leaving Town” on YouTube.
