Cave Cafe – November 3, 2009

Valentiger found themselves at the Fish House/Cave Cafe on the campus of Calvin College for yet another Tuesday night concert.  This time, they were opening for Perry Wright, hired gun on the Mountain Goats tour.  The boys swore to “bookstore volume,” but found themselves somewhere halfway to rock by the time “The Girl That Everyone Forgot,” “Hard To Let Me Down”  and “Leaving Town” rolled around near the end of the set.  “Man On Fire” soared while “Never Ready” soothed with Shirey and Kehoe allowed very good monitors for singing.  The boys were coming off a long drought of practice and Rider was one Red Bull and two shots of espresso deep.  However, they pulled off quite a solid set.  “Have It All” was skipped for the first time in many sets, leaving all songs from Magnet Heart Conveyor at rest.  Despite this, a listener who owned a vinyl copy still recognized the band’s sound.  Perry went on to play his softly spoken tales through a wicked fury of feedback, even taking such drastic steps as playing his acoustic guitar through Shirey’s amplifier.  It produced no better results, but he took it in stride and made the best of conditions.  Afterward, Shirey and Rider made their way into the night, seizing their first opportunity in years to be anywhere but Gardella’s on a Tuesday night.  Cheers to Calvin for bringing quality acts to Grand Rapids – come out and support these shows!
