Schuler Books – March 19, 2010

Valentiger decided to fill this hour-and-a-half set without delving into the Magnet Heart Conveyor catalog.  There was no “Have It All,” “Sunshine Arms” or even an “In Your Head.”  However, a lot of new songs were performed live for the first time, which may have been more exciting for both audience and band.  Valentiger seems to really thrive in acoustic situations such as the Schuler stage, where Shirey’s lyrics and vocals come to the foreground.  Kehoe’s harmonies sweeten, while also given the chance to perform a few tunes on piano.  The band’s intricacy is very apparent and is heightened with the attentive audience spilling out into the bookstore.  Among newer songs, “Why I’m Not Great” really seemed to stand out with it’s steady rhythm and grounding lyrics.  “Oh My God! This Weekend,” “Love To Forgive,” “Into The Sun” and the aptly titled “New One” were also performed.  Though working hard to nail the newer material, the boys were obviously having fun up there, even outright laughing through the third verse of Bob Dylan’s “You Aint Goin’ Nowhere.” I doubt Dylan himself took it too seriously.
