SPACE – July 8, 2011
So begins the story of Kahler’s entry into VALENTIGER. There was no dipping of the toes, he was coming in to a band who had just released a record, had their music in regular rotation on television ads and had just come off tour in full swing. The band was putting in the hours to get him up to speed on several years’ worth of material for upcoming gigs and it showed; the new trio was looking tight. However, they were put to the test at Kahler’s first ‘gig’, which was actually a live taping of an acoustic performance. The video series was put together by Scopitone Vidbox and Grand Rapids Social Diary. Being during ArtPrize, the band filmed three songs in Brewery Vivant where 100’s of origami figures were hanging from the ceiling. The difficulty came in the fact that there was no amplification outside of the bass amp. So, the boys were singing dry over their own instruments, while simultaneously trying to hear Shirey’s acoustic guitar as well. It was a hell of a way to dive into the band but the performance and videos turned out well. Tack on a photo shoot, the trio was official.
Now, from there Kahler was also thrown a curveball as the band was scheduled to perform at an event called SPACE. The idea was to take vacant buildings or ‘spaces’ and hold events in them to encourage economic growth. It included an evening of watching live artists, listening to live music and mingling – all with the idea that if the right people come it might influence someone to buy or rent the vacant spaces. This lead VALENTIGER to performing in a very active and reverberated room, since it was largely an empty and vacant space. No amount of bodies could really tame the sound in the room and this makes it difficult for sound waves to be controlled, making for a bit of a muddy and confusing performance. At any rate, the band had fun with it and there was a pretty good showing for Kahler’s first official show. Rider played with the echo on the microphone, “VALENTIGER…in SPACE…space…space.” The joke lives on.
